QUEENS, N.Y. - A Robbie Knightes RBI fielder's choice in the top of the sixth proved decisive as Black defeated Red, 2-1, in a six-inning game to open the 2014 Red-Black Intrasquad World Series. Knightes finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Jarred Mederos was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk to lead Black offensively. Ryan McCormick struck out six in 4.0 innings of one-run ball on the mound for Black.
Aidan McDermott finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and Jamie Galazin was 1-for-2 for Red, which was held to just two hits in the ballgame. Starter Cody Stashak surrendered one run and had five strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Red took advantage of a leadoff walk to grab a 1-0 lead. Jesse Berardi drew the leadoff walk and moved to second on a groundout before scoring on a McDermott RBI single.
Black answered immediately and tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the top of the fifth. Mark Venice led off with a single and eventually scored from second on a Mederos RBI single.
Black followed with another run in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Matt Harris led off with a single, but was caught stealing before Zach Lauricella restarted things with a one-out walk. After a Troy Dixon single set up runners on the corners, an RBI fielder's choice from Knightes plated the go-ahead run.
Joe Kuzia walked the lead off man in the bottom of the sixth, but closed out the game with a double play and a game-ending pop out.
