QUEENS, N.Y. - Red Storm Sports had the opportunity to sit down and talk with senior Kelsey Moyer of the St. John's softball team before the centerfielder joins the Red Storm for her final season on the softball diamond.
Since joining the softball team as a freshman in 2011, Moyer has played in 129 games as a member of the Red Storm and started all 53 games last season as a junior. Over those three years, Moyer has only recorded 99 putouts and 12 assists while only committing three errors. This season, the senior centerfielder looks to be the core of the Red Storm outfield as she takes to the field for the final season of her career.
Catching Up With Kelsey Moyer
Q: What has been your favorite part about being a member of the St. John's softball team for the past four years?
A: My favorite part has been making the friends that will last me a lifetime. These girls have been with me for the past four years and we have become a family. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Q: What has been your most memorable moment on the softball diamond during your time at St. John's?
A: My most memorable moment was two years ago when we went to the BIG EAST Tournament and beat Syracuse in the first round to shock everyone.
Q: Over the past three seasons, what has been your favorite field to play on and why?
A: My favorite field to play on, besides our own of course, has been at USF. It's attached to the baseball field and is just beautifully built. I'm excited to be able to go back and play there for my last year.
Q: What game are you most looking forward to this season?
A: I am most looking forward to our senior day game (April 27 vs. Creighton) and playing Villanova in the final games of the year because we have been playing them for the last three years.
Q: What is your personal goal for the season?
A: My personal goal for this season is to just go out there, have fun and do the best that I can and make sure that this team has a great season together.
Q: Off the field, what has been your most memorable moment at St. John's?
A: My most memorable moment off the field was during my freshman year at Madison Square Garden when St. John's men's basketball upset Duke.
Q: What piece of advice would you give to an incoming freshman looking to play softball at St. John's?
A: Have an open mind and enjoy everything that New York City and St. John's has to offer. Coming from San Diego to New York made me realize that there is a lot more out there than just a small beach city with nice weather.
Q: What are your plans come graduation in May?
A: I'm not exactly sure what my plan is. Either find a job somewhere in sports marketing or apply for grad school for the spring semester.
Q: If you didn't play college softball, what do you think you would be doing instead?
A: If I didn't play college softball, I really don't know where I would be. If I had to guess, I would most likely be back in California in a sorority.
Q: What is one piece of advice you want to share with your team before heading into your final season with the Red Storm?
A: Leave it all out on the field because four years goes by in the blink of an eye. You never realize how quickly it passes until your senior year.
Moyer and the rest of the St. John's softball team open the season on Friday, Feb. 7, with a pair of games against Tulsa and Ohio State in the FAU "Kick-Off" Classic beginning at 9 a.m. Throughout the season, Red Storm Sports will catch up with each of the other three seniors as they journey through their final season at St. John's.
Admission to all home games for the 2014 Red Storm softball season is free to fans of all ages. For more information on Red Storm Field, including how to donate to the new Red Storm Field project, click here.
