QUEENS, N.Y. - Playing professionally is the ultimate dream for every aspiring women's soccer player, but for recent St. John's graduate Amy Marron, this dream has become a reality as she spent this summer playing for Afturelding, a professional organization within one of the top leagues in all of Iceland.
During her four-year career with the Red Storm, Marron was recognized as a three-time All-BIG EAST selection, a member of the NSCAA Scholar All-East Region team and named the 2012 Marianne Viscovich Powderly Memorial Award winner. Marron, who appeared in 70 games with 69 starts, recorded eight goals and 11 assists for 27 points for the Red Storm and capped her career with a four-goal, seven-assist senior campaign.
With an impressive senior campaign coming to a close, Marron had one last opportunity to join her team in making history as she led the squad to its first ever NCAA Tournament victory with a 3-1 victory on the road against UCF on Nov. 16, 2013.
"I was fortunate enough to play with St. John's over the past four years where my game and mental toughness were tested every day," said Marron. "The team, as well as myself, improved in many ways over the years which made our last year extremely special."
That journey was more than just special for the graduating senior as it gave her the mental toughness to continue her dream of becoming a professional soccer player.
"Finishing up at St. John's in the fall with what I feel was the most complete team throughout my time there and playing against tough competition definitely made the transition to playing professionally easier," said Marron. "I would say the main part of my game that has been tested has been the mental aspect."
The defender has wasted no time adjusting, appearing in 10 games already this season for Afturelding and scoring her first professional goal on June 24 in a 4-1 victory over ÃA.
"Joining a new team will always bring different challenges, but I have found that this has been a huge learning and growing experience for me mentally, both on and off the field," shared Marron. "Over time the girls, as well as myself, have adjusted to the language barrier and we can see the difference on the field. Plus, learning some basic Icelandic soccer terms never hurts!"
