QUEENS, N.Y. - Just a few months removed from putting the finishing touches on his record-breaking St. John's lacrosse career, recent graduate Kieran McArdle was named Major League Lacrosse's 2014 Cascade Rookie of the Year, as voted by coaches and general managers of the nation's premier professional outdoor lacrosse league. The announcement came on Tuesday afternoon with McArdle earning 11 of the 15 first-place votes handed out.
Selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft by the Florida Launch, McArdle wasted little time in bringing his record-breaking ways to the professional level. He marked his and the Launch's first MLL season by totaling 49 points on 34 goals and 15 assists, setting league records for points and goals in a single season by a rookie.
"This has been a great learning experience," said McArdle, St. John's University Class of 2014. "It is an amazing feeling to win this award. It was definitely a goal coming into the season, and it's a huge honor considering all of the rookie who made an impact on their teams this year."
Behind McArdle, who totaled 72 points in the voting, Rochester attackman and Duke product Jordan Wolf finished second with 36 points and Lizards' rookie defenseman Joe Fletcher came in third with 22 points.
McArdle was twice named the Cascade Rookie of the Week for his outstanding play in his inaugural MLL campaign. In Week 4, he earned the honor in his second game with the Launch after posting a six-point performance in his team's victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks. McArdle also collected the honor in Week 12 after tallying a season-high 10 points with five goals and five assists in a victory over Boston.
"I wasn't aware of the records in points and goals coming into the season, but I knew that in order to be considered for Rookie of the Year I would have to perform a high level and come close to setting records," said McArdle.
A native of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., McArdle was a three-time United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America and two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honoree with the Red Storm. He left St. John's as the program's all-time leader in career points, goals and assists - becoming the first player in St. John's history to record 200 points, 100 assists and 100 goals in a career - and in his final two seasons in Queens led the BIG EAST in points, goals and assists per game.
