St. John's To Host Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic

QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a 1-2 record at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic in Honolulu, Hawai'i, the Red Storm (5-2) return home on Sept. 12-13 to host the 2014 Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic which features four matches in two days at Carnesecca Arena. St. John's will open things up with a match against Dartmouth and 2013 America East champion New Hampshire on Sept. 12 before rounding things out against St. Francis (N.Y.) and Fresno State on Sept. 13.

SCOUTING DARTMOUTH (3-0)
Dartmouth was crowned champion of the Greyhound Challenge with a 3-0 record following a successful season-opening at the Loyola Tournament. Dartmouth swept both Loyola and Quinnipiac after defeating Saint Francis (PA) in tournament opener.
Junior outside hitter Paige Caridi was named the Tournament Most Outstanding Player, with 28 kills along with 21 digs over the weekend.
Erin Lindsey enters her fourth season as the head coach for Dartmouth. Last year Dartmouth reached double digit figures in wins (11) for the second time under Lindsey.
Dartmouth is averaging 12.3 kills per set along with 13.4 digs per set.
SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE (3-4)
New Hampshire earned a split in the opening day of the Golden Flashes Classic, sweeping Morehead State while University of Evansville toppled the Wildcats in three. The Wildcats are now 2-4 so far in the 2014 season.
Junior right side hitter Brenna Buckwalter was named the America East Player of the Week. She posted 3.40 kills per set and averaged a .357 attack percentage in the Golden Flashes Classic.
Jill Hirschinger, a five-time America East Coach of the Year enters her 19th season as the head coach for the Wildcats, marking her 36th season as a head volleyball coach.
Last season, the Wildcats earned an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament with a 20-12 overall record winning the 2013 America East Championship.
New Hampshire is averaging 12.73 kills per set and 16 digs per set.
SCOUTING ST. FRANCIS - N.Y. (2-7)
St. Francis (N.Y.) opened up their season with a 1-3 record at the Hofstra University Invitational.
Senior outside hitter Ali Long is leading the Terriers with 3.05 digs per set.
Abigail (Abra) Rummel has been named the new St. Francis's head women's volleyball coach. She previously served as the assistant coach at Rider University and was invited by USA Volleyball to serve as the High Performance Assistant Coach in April.
St. Francis is averaging 10 kills per set and 13 digs per set.
SCOUTING FRESNO STATE (2-4)
Fresno State capped action in the Sacramento State Invitational with a pair of losses against two of the West Coast's top teams, bringing their record to 2-4.
Against Loyola Marymount, junior outside hitter Zana Bowens led the Dogs with 14 kills for the fourth time in the last five matches and her 17 points was her fifth straight team-high. For the tournament she led the team with 3.46 kills per set and 4.42 points per set.
Lauren Netherby-Sewell is entering her seventh season as the head coach for Fresno State.
In 2013, the Dogs finished with a 17-15 overall mark, averaging 13.5 kills per set and 14.6 digs per set.
PALGUTOVA REPEATS AS BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior outside hitter Karin Palgutova was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the second-consecutive week, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. In a 2-2 week for the Red Storm, Palgutova racked up 4.57 kills per set with a .309 attacking percentage.
Last week, as the Red Storm traveled to Hawaii, Palgutova posted a season-high 19 kills to go with a .457 attacking percentage as the Red Storm swept New Mexico. She was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 4.36 kills per set with a .261 hitting percentage.
This is Palgutova's third-career BIG EAST Player of the Week honor, receiving her first award on Sept. 16, 2013.
ST. JOHN'S SWEEPS NEW MEXICO AT HAWAIIAN AIRLINES CLASSIC
St. John's bounced back from its first loss of the season to sweep New Mexico, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23) on Friday night in their second match of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
With the victory, the Red Storm improves to 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in the tournament, while the Lobos fall to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 at the event.
St. John's registered its fourth sweep of the 2014 campaign while finishing the match with a .356 hitting percentage - the second-highest of the season.
UP NEXT
The Red Storm will then remain in Queens for one of the most interesting matches of the season against La Salle (Sept. 17). For the first time in program history, Persico will have the opportunity to coach against one of her former players as 2006 graduate Caitlin Rimigaila returns to Carnesecca Arena as the head coach of a developing La Salle team.
