STORRS, Conn. - Facing Connecticut for the first time since the Huskies left the BIG EAST at the end of the 2012-13 season, the Red Storm struggled to keep UConn off the board on Friday night. Sophomore forward Rachel Hill, who ranks in the top ten nationally in goals, paced the Huskies with two tallies as they downed the Red Storm, 4-1, in Storrs, Conn.
For the second straight game, sophomore keeper Diana Poulin recorded an impressive amount of saves against tough competition, turning away eight UConn shots.
The Huskies, who feature one of the top offenses in the American Athletic Conference, registered 21 shots in the match.
UConn tallied the game's first goal in the 17th minute, when Rachel Hill headed one into the back of the net off a corner form Danielle Gottwik.
Hill, the leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference, would strike again 16 minutes later, firing her eighth goal of the year into the Red Storm cage from 25 yards out and giving the Huskies a 2-0 advantage.
Five minutes later, the Huskies extended their lead to three, as Brittany Moreau scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Liana Hinds.
Trailing 3-0 at the half, the Red Storm wasted no time coming out of the locker room. Two and a half minutes into the action, Deanna Murino put a shot on net that was turned away by UConn keeper Emily Armstrong. Luckily for St. John's, junior Emily Cubbage was in the right place at the right time, as she took the rebound and buried it in the back of the cage for her first goal of the year.
Just over ten minutes later the Huskies bumped their lead back to three, 4-1, as Hinds recorded her first career goal on an assist from Moreau.
The Red Storm continues its swing through New England on Sunday, heading to Hanover, N.H., for a Sunday afternoon showdown with Dartmouth at 1 p.m.
