Following more than a month of unbeaten play, the Red Storm lost its first conference match of the year on The Hilltop, falling 3-1 to Georgetown. Heading into the contest, the Red Storm had allowed only four goals in 12 games. Surrendering two scores off corner kicks, the Red Storm had to contend with 14 Hoyas corners on the day, two more than they had conceded in the previous three BIG EAST match ups combined.
The Red Storm has been exceptional at home so far this year, sporting a 4-0 record inside the friendly confines of Belson Stadium. On the season, the Red Storm is outscoring its opponents 10-1 in Queens.
Rachel Daly scored in Thursday's contest for the Red Storm, her 12th tally of the year in just 13 games. As of Friday, she leads the BIG EAST and ranks third nationally. Of those 12 goals, six have proven to be game winners, tied for the NCAA lead in that category.
Despite allowing a season-high three goals against Georgetown, the Red Storm still packs one of the most potent defensive units in all of college soccer. The Red Storm ranks second in the BIG EAST and 20th nationally in goals against average (0.54), while the team's nine total shutouts are just one shy of tying the program record in that category.
SCOUTING CREIGHTON
After finishing eighth in the BIG EAST a year ago and missing out on the conference tournament, the Bluejays are off to a 10-5 start this season, including separate winning streaks of three and four games.
Creighton, sporting a 2-2 record in BIG EAST play, is led on the offensive end by Lauren Sullivan and Ylenia Sachau. Sullivan, a 5-7 junior from Kansas City, Mo., has eight goals and two assists for 18 points on the season, while Sachau a midfielder from Germany, has tallied five goals.
The Bluejays are riding a two-game winning streak heading into Sunday, having recently picked up victories over Villanova and Seton Hall. Against the Pirates on Thursday, Creighton notched its first overtime victory of the season, as Alyssa Jara slotted one home in the 99th minute to give the Bluejays the win.
Freshman Erin Scott has taken on the starting goalkeeping duties for Creighton this season, registering a 1.33 goals against average with six shutouts in 15 apperances. Her .802 save percentage leads the BIG EAST.
ST. JOHN'S vs. CREIGHTON -- THE SERIES
The Red Storm and the Bluejays have played three matches all-time against each other, with both teams sporting records of 1-1-1.
Two of these matches have occurred since Creighton joined the BIG EAST prior to the 2013-14 season, with St. John's holding a 1-0-1 advantage over that stretch. The other game came all the way back during the 1991 season, a 2-0 win for the Bluejays.
Last year, the Red Storm registered a 1-0 victory on the road in Omaha, led by a goal from senior Marisa Ammaturo.
