QUEENS, N.Y. - On Saturday, Oct. 17, St. John's University Athletics held FANFEST, presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery, drawings hundreds of fans and athletic alumni to campus. Following FANFEST was the second annual Red Storm 5K Run/Walk, presented by BODYARMOUR and held in partnership with the St. John's Army ROTC. Proceeds from Saturday's race will support student-athlete scholarships and the Army ROTC program, as well as the Lead The Way Fund, Inc., a non-profit organization established to raise funds in support of disabled U.S. Army Rangers and their families.
Andrea Previati, a member of the men's soccer team, was the first runner to cross the finish line on Saturday, completing the campus 5K course in a time of 19:23.1. Previati was not the only St. John's student-athlete to participate in the 5K as he was joined by members of the women's tennis team and the softball team. In the women's open category, Rebecca McCollum placed first with a time of 20:58.3.
In other notable performances, the top three female finishers among St. John's students were student-athletes. Olaya Inclan Solis and Zofia Stanisz finished first and second representing the women's tennis team, and Yvonne Rericha of the softball team took home third. In the male St. John's student category, John Kuehn Jr., the track & field team student manager, finished second with a time of 20:21.0.
Prior to FANFEST several Red Storm teams held alumni events of their own, welcoming former student-athletes back to campus, including the men's basketball and baseball teams.
The men's basketball team began their alumni day with the annual memorial mass, held for St. John's University basketball players, coaches, staff and friends. At the end of the mass Coach Lou Carnesecca spoke about the history and tradition of St. John's basketball and introduced the entire men's basketball team (coaches and players), explaining how the current team is now a part of this tradition. Following mass the men's basketball team held a luncheon and an open practice in which about 75 alumni came out to watch.
