QUEENS, N.Y. -- The St. John's softball squad joined fellow student-athletes and fans on Saturday to take part in the second annual Red Storm 5K Run/Walk, presented by BODYARMOUR and held in partnership with the St. John's Army ROTC.
The Red Storm 5K Run/Walk fundraises money to support student-athlete scholarships and the Army ROTC program, as well as the Lead The Way Fund, Inc., a non-profit organization established to raise funds in support of disabled U.S. Army Rangers and their families.
"It was really run but nerve racking," Shirley Chui said. "I'm not a runner but I felt really good afterward. It was nice to run for a cause."
Senior outfielder Yvonne Rericha was among the top-three female students from St. John's. Rericha took home third in the student category with a time of 23:53.6.
Sophomore outfielder Lauren Zick placed 31st overall and eighth amongst females with a 25:39 clip.
Juniors Grace Kramer and Kaitlyn Wilkens finished with identical times of 31:54 to tie for 18th in the female-only category.
"I feel very accomplished after today but the best part was having the team there to cheer us on," Kramer said. "I had a super fun time!"
Andrea Previati, a member of the men's soccer team, was the first runner to cross the finish line on Saturday, completing the campus 5K course in a time of 19:23.1.
Chui and Carly Williams also secured top-70 finishes with times under 32:30.
