QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. Johns softball team hosted its 10th annual 100-out fundraiser game on Wednesday to benefit the future of the Red Storm program. Team Storm defeated Team Red, 13-10.
This year, the game aims to raise funds for a new portable addition to the V-flex hitting system that contributed to an impressive season at the plate last year. In addition, the team hopes to add four new, state-of-the-art Burbank protective screens and a storage shed to help safeguard equipment.
"There are two goals in this game. One is the work we get in with our team and the other is utilize a practice to fundraise money for our program to buy some of the equipment our budget is not able to cover," head coach Amy Kvilhaug said.
St. John's split into two squads and played until 100 outs were recorded. This allowed the team to practice various in-game situations such as hit-and-runs to help the Johnnies for the upcoming 2016 season.
"We are getting close to our goal of $4,000 so we'd like to make a push and remind everyone that it's never too late to donate," Kvilhaug added. "For those who have already donated we'd like to thank them for their generosity. It's much appreciated not only by the coaching staff but especially the players who benefit from the items that we purchase."
Since its inception in 2006, the 100-out fundraiser has helped the softball program gather donations that have been used for items that include a new pitching machine and a visual hitting system.
Team Red consisted of Savannah Warren, Krystal Puga, Hannah Anderson, Monique Landini, Shirley Chui, Lauren Zick and Taylor Hill.
Team Storm was made up of Kaitlyn Wilkens, Carly Williams, Taylor Stimson, Sydney McCollum, Christina Melendez, Yvonne Rericha and Brittany Garcia.
Pitchers were utilized for both squads.
Team Storm jumped out of the gate with eight runs in the first two situations to take an early 8-5 advantage.
"I thought there were a lot of good things our hitters did that might not show in the scorebooks, like the fact that we fouled off a lot of pitches," Kvilhaug said. "While we might not have recorded a base hit, fouling pitches off helps drive up the pitch counts of our opponent."
Team Red would keep the Storm bats silent until the seventh situation when they added a run. However, Team Red made a push in the eighth with four runs to even the score at 10-10.
Down two, Wilkens launched a two-run double that proved to be the difference-maker as Team Storm recorded a 13-10 victory.
"In the last inning we brought our focus and energy level back up," Kvilhaug added. "Both teams were down [at one point] with their backs against the wall, which this program has been notorious for in the past, and we came back the way that we always have."
