QUEENS, N.Y. -- The St. John's softball squad hosted its annual Turkey Trot on Saturday as the team took part in a 3.32-mile run around the beautifully, scenic Central Park in Manhattan.
"The annual turkey trot is always a great day for our program," head coach Amy Kvilhaug said. "It is obviously a conditioning session for the team, but it also gives us a wonderful cultural NYC experience." Not many teams get to say they can use Central Park as a training ground for their conditioning. It's one of the fantastic perks of playing for St. John's University."
Held the Saturday before Thanksgiving with past sites including the Brooklyn and 59th street bridges, the Central Park location has served as the home of the Turkey Trot over the past two years. The race takes place on the Central Park Bridle path, with two laps around the Jacqueline Kenney Onassis Reservoir.
Yvonne Rericha finished with the best time as the senior outfielder cruised around the track in 25:48. The next two best times went to Lauren Zick and Hannah Anderson, whom recorded times of 27:50 and 28:28, respectively.
Former alumnus and team-captain of the 2014-15 St. John's BIG EAST Championship squad, Ellen Czuba made an appearance at the park.
"In softball we are training to run 60 feet at a time and to drive the ball and to move laterally as quickly as we can, not to run a fast 5K," Kvilhaug added. "The training for the two is totally different so I like to use this day as more of a mental challenge than anything else. The theme is to go out and give 100%."
