QUEENS, N.Y. - Coming off a campaign that saw the Red Storm turn in its best-ever finish to a BIG EAST regular season, St. John's Women's Soccer Head Coach Ian Stone has announced that his team will begin a six-game spring schedule on March 14.
The Red Storm's first exhibition match will come in New Jersey against Sky Blue FC, a member of the Women's National Soccer League, the premier women's professional association in the United States. Last season, Sky Blue FC turned in a record of 9-8-7 in its 24-game NWSL slate, finishing seventh in the league. Sky Blue features a number of international women's soccer standouts, most notably Christie Rampone, the most capped active women's player in the world and a former captain of the US Women's National Team. Sky Blue also sports players that have played on the Canadian, Mexican and Australian national teams.
After two weeks off to rest and recuperate, the Red Storm will return to action against a collegiate opponent, hosting local foe Fordham on March 28 at 1 p.m. The first of four games to be held at Belson Stadium this spring, the Fordham match will feature a Rams squad that went 8-9-1 last season, its first under Jessica Clinton, a former assistant coach to Stone at St. John's from 2007-2008.
On April 11, the Red Storm will gear up for a special match, its annual alumnae game. The current edition of the Red Storm will face off against the greats of St. John's past in a 1 p.m. tilt at Belson Stadium.
St. John's will get right back to work the following day, playing its final road game of the spring when it heads to Pelham, N.Y., for a match up with the New York Athletic Club. First kick is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 12.
The Red Storm will conclude its spring schedule two weeks later, when it closes out April with a pair of games. On Friday, April 24, St. John's will play host to Manhattan at 7 p.m. before welcoming Army to its spring finale on Sunday, April 26, at 5 p.m. Last season, Manhattan went 8-8-2 with a 3-5-2 mark in the MAAC, while Army turned in a record of 7-9-3, 4-2-3 in the Patriot League.
