QUEENS, N.Y. - Aliyyah Handford and Danaejah Grant combined for 53 of their team's 75 points, lifting the Red Storm to a 75-61 victory over Georgetown on Senior Day in Carnesecca Arena.
"I thought we played a great first half, came out with a lot of energy," said St. John's Head Coach Joe Tartamella. "I thought we executed extremely well coming into halftime, holding them to 24 points. We gave them a couple that were easy. Obviously we need to get better from our second-half effort, try to make sure we maintain our legs and our mental state. I thought we got lost a little for a couple of minutes, but we found a way… to win the game and we made the big plays when we had to."
Handford tied a season-high with 27 points, marking the fourth time this year that the Newark, N.J., native has scored that many in a game. In addition to her 10-for-19 performance from the floor, the junior guard also registered a career-high seven assists, six rebounds and four steals.
Grant finished the contest with 26 points, converting on nine of her 20 shot attempts from the field, including a three-point field goal.
Sunday marked the final home game for the Red Storm's seniors, including Amber Thompson. The Newark, N.J., native narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with eight points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in her last game at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm went 46-15 on its home floor in Thompson's four years. Redshirt senior Selina Archer was also honored prior to the game.
Jade Walker also finished the game in double figures for the Red Storm against Georgetown, scoring 12 points on six-of-nine shooting. In addition, Walker blocked three shots.
As a team, the Red Storm forced 26 Georgetown turnovers on the afternoon, tying a season-high.
Down 4-2 in the early going, the Red Storm rattled off a quick 9-0 run, opening up a seven point lead in the game's first minutes.
The Red Storm continued to pour it on over the next few minutes, building its lead to double digits, 24-14, on a Walker layup near the midway mark of the period.
A 14-0 run from over the course of nearly eight minutes helped lift the Red Storm advantage to 17 by the conclusion of the opening half, as St. John's entered the locker room with a 41-24 lead.
Georgetown chipped into the St. John's lead in the opening minutes of the latter stanza, moving within 12, 45-33, on a pair of Faith Woodward free throws with 16:24 to play.
The Red Storm would maintain a lead in that area over the next several minutes before the Hoyas fired off an 11-1 run, trimming the deficit to just four, 54-50, at the halfway point of the period.
Leading 56-52 just over a minute later, a Grant jumper sparked an 8-0 run for the Red Storm, building the advantage back to double digits and putting the contest out of reach for the Hoyas. Handford scored four of the team's eight points during the tear.
The Red Storm has one weekend of regular season play remaining in 2014-15, beginning with a Friday evening tilt at Butler. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
