QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior Zach Lauricella has been selected as one of 30 baseball candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, an honor bestowed upon an NCAA Division I senior with notable achievements in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as community leaders.
A management major with a 3.40 GPA, Lauricella earned first team Capital One Academic All-District honors as a junior and plans to pursue a Master of Science in Information Systems. The senior was the recipient of the 2013-14 BIG EAST Post Graduate Scholarship, which is awarded by the conference each year to one male and one female student-athlete from each member institution. Lauricella also won the 2013-14 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award, an honor presented to one student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport.
A two-time All-BIG EAST selection, Lauricella earned second team All-BIG EAST honors as a junior (2014) and third team All-BIG EAST accolades as a sophomore (2013). Lauricella was also named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team as a freshman (2012) after helping the Red Storm win the BIG EAST Tournament title. Lauricella has a .299 career average to go with 41 doubles, 125 RBI and 112 runs scored in 183 games. The senior needs just three doubles and 12 RBI to move into the program's all-time top 10.
Lauricella has served as a baseball team representative to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee since 2012 and has also been a St. John's Student Development 101 Peer Educator since 2013.
The senior has been involved in numerous community service initiatives, including the Miracle League of Long Island, St. John the Baptist Parish, St. Nicholas of Tolentine Men's Shelter, American Cancer Society's Relay For Life and St. John's University Campus Ministry.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season. Those finalists will be placed on the official ballot, which will be distributed to media, coaches and fans through a nationwide voting system. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the College World Series.
