WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Despite a late comeback by the Red Storm to tie the match at three apiece, the team was unable to clinch the victory over George Washington University on Sunday and lost 4-3.
Â
The Red Storm entered singles play down 1-0 after losing the early doubles point. Following a pair of wins in the first two singles matches, the Colonials led the Red Storm 3-0.
Â
Facing a daunting deficit, St. John's rallied back and earned three consecutive points in singles play. Lucas Hejhal scored the first point of the day for the Red Storm with a three-set win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 1 singles slot.
Â
Senior Erick Reyes then followed with another three-set victory, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4. Robert Livi then capped off the run to tie the match at 3-3 with his straight-set win in the third flight, 7-5, 6-3.
Â
The deciding point came down to the No. 5 singles slot between freshmen Elio Livi and Julius Tverijonas. Livi lost the first set, 6-4, but fought back to win the second set, 7-5, forcing a third set. Tverijonas defeated Livi, 6-1, in the third set to claim the 4-3 victory for the Colonials.
Â
The loss snaps the Red Storm's five-game winning streak and puts the team at 9-8 on the season. Up next, the Red Storm hits the road to take on VCU on Sunday.
