The Red Storm squad won 10 out of 13 matches against Fordham and Morgan State

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team kicked off its fall schedule on Friday, shining against opponents Fordham and Morgan State at the Hofstra Invitational.

Due to weather concerns, the tournament was adjusted to a pair of contests on Friday at the Hofstra Tennis Courts on Long Island. The Johnnies won of the 13 completed matches as a team against Fordham and Morgan State.

Mats Pottbecker and Taichi Wakamatsu led the way for the Red Storm, each picking up a pair of singles victories. Pottbecker opened the day with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Fordham's Dhananjay Athreya before defeating Morgan State's Mohamed Ridha Ghettas by the same score. Wakamatsu didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Fordham's Jeremy Victoria and followed with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) triumph over Morgan State's Abdulraheem Isa.

Armando Sotelo also turned in a strong showing, battling past Fordham's Timotej Stofa, 6-3, 2-6, 10-4. The senior teamed up with Wakamatsu to win both of their doubles matches, defeating Fordham's Filip Horak and Dhananjay Athreya, 6-4, before cruising past Morgan State's Aziz Missaoui and Yessine Kerouat, 6-1.

Marc Puig Mont, Marek Nano, Adam Kresina and Enrique Lana Almeida also tallied singles victories at the tournament. Puig Mont defeated Fordham's Cristian Ramos, 7-5, 6-3, while Nano and Lana Almeida each earned convincing straight-set wins against Morgan State. Kresina rounded out the Red Storm's singles victories with a 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 win over the Bears' Aziz Missaoui.

St. John's also found success in doubles play, winning the doubles point in both matches. Pottbecker and Maksym Kalabishka recorded a 6-0 victory against Fordham, while Nano and Kresina teamed up for a 6-3 win against Morgan State.

The Red Storm will return to action from Oct. 2-4 at the Saint Joseph's Invitational in Philadelphia.
