May 14, 2015 QUEENS, N.Y. -- For the second time in as many years, senior Erin Burner has found herself among the top in the region, picking up a spot on the 2015 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Great Lakes Region team with second team honors. Joining her on the All-Great Lakes Region squad is the 2015 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year Tori Free who picked up third team honors.
Â
Burner earns her second-straight NFCA All-Region honor after being named the unanimous BIG EAST Player of the Year with a record-breaking season for the Red Storm in 2015. Named a first team selection last year, Burner heads into the NCAA Tucson Regional as the current holder of the program's career record in batting average at .359, breaking the former mark of .350, held by Jo Sherlock (2003-06). With 43 career doubles, 42 home runs and 147 RBI, the senior is also on her way to setting new program bests in each of those categories.
Â
Junior Tori Free was named to the second team after being named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, going 7-1 with a 0.90 ERA in conference play this season while throwing seven complete games that included a pair of shutouts. Named the Pitcher of the Week on March 30th, the right-hander has posted up 43 strikeouts in 54.2 innings in BIG EAST action while holding opponents to a .226 batting average. Overall, Free has posted up an 11-6 record on the season with a 2.00 ERA, striking out 112 batters in 108.1 innings of work while holding batters to a .210 average.
Â
The BIG EAST Champion Red Storm will continue to make program history this weekend as it competes in its first ever NCAA Regional Tournament in Tucson, Arizona, on May 15-17.
