QUEENS, N.Y. -- The St. John's Athletics community gathered in Carnesecca Arena on Monday evening for the 69th Annual Athletics Awards Celebration to honor the year's achievements on the field of competition, in the classroom and in the community.
The celebration began with an evening mass led by Campus Minister for Athletics Fr. Richard Rock C. M. at St. Thomas More Church on campus. Following the mass, Director of Athletics Chris Monasch, department administrators and University staff, along with student-athletes and coaches from all 17 varsity Red Storm teams, came together to commemorate the year's accomplishments.
Monasch opened the evening by addressing the crowd of more than 400 with an outline of the impressive successes of St. John's Athletics this year including the department's commitment to community service, academics and student development. Monasch then introduced Dr. Conrado "Bobby" Gempesaw, President, St. John's University, who delivered introductory remarks. Next, student-athletes Jamal Branch of the men's basketball team, Ellen Czuba of the softball team and Danisha Moss of the volleyball team took to the stage for a special "Win, Graduate, Serve" presentation during which the trio spoke of their experiences as Red Storm student-athletes.
Following dinner, Co-Masters of Ceremonies, Associate Vice President for Athletics Kathleen Meehan and Associate Vice President for Academic Support Services Dr. Nancy Kaplan began the awards portion of the evening, including honoring team MVPs, St. John's support groups and student-athletes receiving academic recognition.
Following a video featuring the athletic highlights from the 2014-15 year, the night's special recognition awards were announced by Meehan and Kaplan. Closing remarks by Monasch and a closing prayer delivered by Fr. Rock concluded the evening.
