QUEENS, N.Y. - Following the most successful season in program history, St. John's Softball Head Coach Amy Kvilhaug has announced that Bob Guerriero has been elevated to the position of associate head coach, effective immediately.
"I could not be happier to name Bob our associate head coach," said Kvilhaug. "He has been involved in the sport of softball for over 20 years, beginning at the grass roots level and eventually moving through the ranks as a top notch DI assistant coach for over 10 years. Bob has shown a great deal of loyalty and commitment to the program since his arrival in 2012. This title change is our commitment to keep him as a mainstay and to show his value to the program. His guidance has been an integral part of our success over the last few years and will continue to be in the future."
Guerriero, who had served as an assistant on the staff since his hiring in 2012, has been instrumental in the Red Storm's offensive rebirth over the past few seasons. After coaching the Red Storm to a then-record .276 team batting average in 2014, Guerriero helped the Red Storm shatter that mark in 2015, as the squad hit at a .317 clip en route to the program's first-ever BIG EAST title. The Red Storm also broke schools records for runs scored (242), runs batted in (208), walks (142) and conference victories (16).
Guerriero was instrumental in helping Erin Burner cement her place as one of the most decorated players in St. John's history in 2015, as the senior catcher was named the unanimous BIG EAST Player of the Year after hitting .439 with an on-base percentage of .548 and an .848 slugging percentage.
Guerriero had plenty of BIG EAST softball experience prior to his arrival in Queens, serving as an assistant coach at Seton Hall University. In his time at South Orange, Guerriero helped lead the Pirates to a pair of conference titles in 2004 and 2005.
