QUEENS, N.Y. - After recording a goal and an assist in the Red Storm's opening weekend of action, Rachel Daly has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced this afternoon by the league office.
Daly, the BIG EAST Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year, tallied the game-winning goal in the 81st minute against Stony Brook on Friday night, splitting a pair of defenders and burying a shot on the breakaway.
On Sunday against Towson, Daly picked up her first assist of the season, finding teammate Shelby Halász at the top of the box with a deft pass through traffic. Halász promptly fired a shot to the top right corner of the net, giving the Red Storm the 1-0 lead with which it would end the contest.
Daly, one of the 28 players named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List at the beginning of the month, earned First Team All-BIG EAST honors a year ago after leading the Red Storm with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. In 2013, Daly was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and an NSCAA All-American after topping the nation with 23 goals on the year.
Daly, who currently ranks third on the St. John's career lists in both goals and points, took over the top spot on the program's career shots list on Sunday night, accomplishing the feat in just two-plus seasons of action.
Daly and the Red Storm return to action on Friday night, traveling to Syracuse for a match with their former BIG EAST rivals. First kick is set for 7 p.m.
