QUEENS, N.Y. - Combining to form one of the most dominant defensive duos in the nation, Diana Poulin and Georgia Kearney-Perry have been honored by the BIG EAST for their performances this weekend. Poulin was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, while Kearney-Perry found a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced this morning by the league office.
Poulin, the reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and the BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, registered back-to-back clean sheets in 1-0 victories over Syracuse and Colgate. After making four saves against the Orange on Friday, the Hauppauge, N.Y., native recorded five stops against the Raiders on Sunday. With 20 minutes to go in the Colgate game, Poulin stepped up in the biggest way possible, turning away a penalty kick to preserve her team's 1-0 lead.
Kearney-Perry put forth another pair of stellar performances this weekend, organizing a St. John's defensive effort that has been beyond stifling this season. Led by Kearney-Perry, the Red Storm recorded its fourth-straight shutout, holding Syracuse and Colgate to just eight shots apiece. The reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, Kearney-Perry was predicted to repeat as the conference's top defensive player this season by the conference's coaches.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Friday evening, traveling to Providence for a 7 p.m. match with Brown.
