WILMINGTON, N.C. - For the fifth time this season, the Red Storm needed just one goal to record a win, as NR/23 St. John's downed Campbell, 1-0, on Friday evening in the opening game of the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational.
Senior captain Emily Cubbage registered the game-winning goal for the Red Storm, while goalkeepers Katie DeVault and Diana Poulin combined for the team's fifth clean sheet of the season. Both DeVault and Poulin each recorded one save on the evening.
The victory marks the second time in the last three seasons that the Red Storm (6-1-0) has won six of its first seven contests; the Red Storm went 7-1-2 to start the 2013 campaign. Campbell, who had won four of its first five, fell to 4-2-0 with the loss.
"There were some nice improvements that were evident in today's performance," said Head Coach Ian Stone, who is now just one win shy of his 200th career victory. "I felt that we possessed the ball better than we had in recent games. We also defended very well as a team again."
After controlling the pace of the match in the early going, the Red Storm was awarded the game's first corner kick in the 36th minute. Shelby Halász then placed a ball into the box that found Cubbage, who headed it into back of the net for her first goal of the year.
From there, the Red Storm continued to assert itself on offense, outshooting Campbell 12-5 for the game. The Red Storm also put eight of its 12 tries on net, the Red Storm's best single game shot-on-goal percentage of the season.
The Red Storm closes out play at the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational on Sunday, squaring off with Richmond at noon.
