WILMINGTON, N.C. - Rachel Daly recorded the 11th multi-goal game of her career and Claudia Cagnina registered her first collegiate tally to lead NR/23 St. John's (7-1-0) to a 3-0 victory over Richmond (2-4-0) on Sunday afternoon at the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational.
With the win, Ian Stone became the first coach in program history to reach the 200-victory mark.
"This game may have been our most complete team performance of the season so far," said Stone. "All 21 players that were with us contributed positively to the weekend both on and off the field."
For their efforts this weekend, Allie Moar, Jesse Schaefer and Lucy Whipp were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Red Storm defense did a tremendous job of stifling the Richmond attack, holding the Spiders without a shot on goal for the full 90 minutes.
St. John's struck early, as Daly netted the 35th of her career in the fourth minute. The sequence started with a corner kick from Alexis Urbanski, whose play-in was redirected before finding the foot of Daly. The Harrogate, England, native then dribbled through traffic to get a better angle before unleashing a shot into the back of the net.
Just over 30 minutes later, the Red Storm struck again, as Cagnina tallied the first goal of her St. John's career. Thanks to some brilliant ball movement, the Lindenhurst, N.Y., was able to get free at the edge of the six-yard box and send it home. Shea Connors and Morgan Tinari registered assists on the goal.
Daly once again found the back of the net in the 66th minute. While her first goal displayed a deft ability to navigate in traffic, her second tally showed shear power, as the senior blasted it past Jessica Stanfill from 25 yards out to give her team a 3-0 lead. Daly's 36th career goal moved her just one behind Cristin Burtis for second in program history.
Katie DeVault and Diana Poulin combined to record a shutout for the second time in three days, marking the sixth time in seven victories that St. John's has kept its opponent off the score sheet.
Three goals marked the Red Storm's largest margin of victory since last year's season-opener, when St. John's defeated St. Francis (Pa.) by the same score.
After five-straight games on the road, the Red Storm returns to the friendly confines of Belson Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 20, playing host to Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
