QUEENS, N.Y. - For the 12th time in the last 13 years, the St. John's women's soccer team has been honored for its outstanding efforts in the classroom, receiving the NSCAA Team Academic Award.
The award is presented to any collegiate soccer team that earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2014-15 academic year, a mark that the Red Storm eclipsed with ease. During a year that saw them reach the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament, the Red Storm also turned in a team GPA of 3.50.
"The fact that the St. John's women's soccer program achieved a 3.50 cumulative GPA last year, in addition to their fine performances on the field and in the community, is a source of great pride to all of our staff members," said Head Coach Ian Stone.
The Red Storm touted a banner year on the academic front in 2014-15. Of the record 182 St. John's student athletes to make the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, 23 of those came from the women's soccer team, meaning that 85 percent of the roster exceeded a 3.0 GPA. In addition, Rachel Daly was honored with the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award for women's soccer and became the first player in program history to earn NSCAA Scholar All-America honors. Chelsey Martino was also recognized with the Elizabeth Lapchick Award, celebrating academic progression over a student-athlete's four years at St. John's, and Emily Cubbage was named NSCAA Second Team Scholar All-East Region.
St. John's is one 211 schools to have both its men's and women's teams recognized, as Dr. David Masur's squad turned in a team GPA of 3.42.
