PROVIDENCE - Having not allowed a goal over the first four games of the season, the NR/17 St. John's Red Storm surrendered a pair of unlucky tallies against Brown on Friday night, suffering its first loss of the campaign, 2-1, at Stevenson Field.
Freshman Christina Bellero scored the lone goal of the game for St. John's (4-1-0), her second of the season. Rachel Daly added an assist for her team-best sixth point of the year.
Despite registering the loss, the Red Storm controlled the tempo for a majority of the game, outshooting Brown 17-7, including a 13-3 second half differential. St. John's also recorded five corner kicks to Brown's one.
Brown (1-0-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off an incredibly unusual play in the fourth minute. After a solid offensive attack, St. John's played the ball back into its defensive end to regroup. As the ball approached Diana Poulin in front of the net, it took an unlucky hop off the turf and deflected to a waiting Brown player, who sent it into the open net.
St. John's struggled to get scoring opportunities over the remainder opening stanza, as a physical Brown defense limited the Johnnies to just four shots in the first 45 minutes of action.
The Red Storm demonstrated a renewed offensive vigor to begin the second half, outshooting the Bears 4-0 in the early going of the latter stanza.
With just under 20 minutes gone in the period, however, the Bears once again found the back of the net. After Georgia Kearney-Perry was taken down in her own zone, Brown gained possession and worked it over to the far side, where Amanda Lane was able to send it past Poulin.
The Red Storm wasted no time in responding to the two-goal deficit. 20 seconds after the Brown goal, Daly found Bellero with a beautiful pass in space and the Melville, N.Y., native buried her second tally of the year.
Despite a determined effort over the rest of the game, the Red Storm was unable to register the equalizer. The Red Storm's best chance came with just over a minute to go, when Daly was turned away from just a few yards out.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, taking on Boston College at 4 p.m. in Newton, Mass.
