QUEENS, N.Y. -- The St. Johns softball team hosted its 11th annual 100-out fundraiser game on Wednesday afternoon to benefit the Red Storm program. In the game, Team Storm took down Team Red, 29-21.
"The 100-out game is one of our staple events each fall in which we have the opportunity not only to practice all kinds of situational work, but also raise money for program needs," said Head Coach Amy Kvilhaug.
The game was played in order to help raise money for the team's spring break trip to Palm Springs, Calif., in which the team will compete against some of the top schools in the nation at the renowned Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
"It is my hope that we reach our goal to assist in our travel plans to Palm Springs," Kvilhaug added. "This is a trip that is important to the program not only in the short term but for future development of where we want our program to be. It will allow us to play perennial powerhouse teams to prepare us for the ultimate goal of competing in the BIG EAST and NCAA Tournament."
Since 2006, the 100-out fundraiser has helped the softball program gather donations that have been used for items such as its V-Flex hitting system.
St. John's split into two squads and played until 100 outs were recorded. This allowed the team to practice various in-game situations that will help the Johnnies prepare for the upcoming 2017 season.
Team Storm was made up of McKenzie Murray, Madison Morris, Kaitlyn Wilkens, Kaitlin Mattera, Lexi Robles, Gretchen Bowie, Hannah Anderson and Brittany Garcia.
Team Red consisted of Grace Kramer, Marissa Rizzi, Savannah Warren, Alyssa Rusch, Krystal Puga, Monique Landini, Laura Delgado, Lauren Zick and Natalie Giroux.
Team Red jumped out of the gate with six runs in the first situation to go on top, 6-4.
However, Team Storm answered with six runs in situation two to take a 10-8 lead. Team Storm would never relinquish that lead as they scored 10 runs in situation five to take a commanding lead and eventually close out the contest with an eight run victory.
"I'd first like to thank our student-athletes for compiling a database of donors and for actually conducting the event. Playing 100 outs is fun, but also challenging," said Kvilhaug. "Our institutional advancement people also play an instrumental role in the administrative conduct of the event and we greatly appreciate their help. I'd also like to thank my coaching staff who helps brainstorm the ideas with me to run the game smoothly and efficiently. Lastly, we are thankful to our communications staff that promote the event and run all the behind the scenes items.
