St. John's Drops Regular Season Finale at Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Playing in its final match of the 2016 regular season, the Red Storm volleyball team was topped by Seton Hall, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon at the Walsh Gym.
St. John's (16-15, 7-11 BIG EAST) was paced by the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Gaia Traballi, who picked up her eighth double-double of the season on 12 digs and 11 kills. Classmate Erica Di Maulo controlled the offense with 28 assists and added four digs. The freshman from Milan, Italy, finishes the season with 1,162 assists, which ranks her ninth all-time in program history for most assists in a single season.
The Johnnies reached the double-digit block plateau, as Danisha Moss recorded four total blocks to increase her program record for blocks in a season to 168. Playing in her final match as a Johnnie, Mona Karkkainen registered four kills, three digs and three total blocks.
The first set of the day began with the Pirates opening up a 12-4 advantage leading to a timeout called by the Johnnies. Seton Hall (16-15, 10-8 BIG EAST) stretched its lead to 23-12 behind kills by Dominique Mason and Danielle Schroeder. St. John's then reeled off five-straight points, before the Pirates won the final two points of the stanza to take the opening set, 25-17.
The Red Storm stepped up its play to start the next set with a 7-3 lead after a kill by Traballi and then expanded its advantage to 14-8 after an ace by Margherita Bianchin. Seton Hall came back to finish the frame on a 17-8 run to win the second set and take a 2-0 lead in the match, despite five kills in the stanza by Traballi.
Coming out of the break, both teams exchanged points with back-and-forth action that brought the score to a tie at 15. After a timeout called by the Johnnies, the Pirates won 10 of the next 18 points to take the set 25-23.
The Red Storm finishes the season with seven conference wins, which is only one win shy of last year's total despite starting as many as four freshmen this season.
