QUEENS, N.Y. -- Heading into her 10th year leading the St. John's softball program, head coach Amy Kvilhaug has announced her team's schedule for the upcoming 2017 season.
Highlighted by a pair of trips to Florida and a cross-country spring break outing in California to open the year, the stacked 51-game slate includes 11 teams that appeared in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, six conference champions, and a total of 33 teams across 18 different states.
The Red Storm's quest for its second NCAA Tournament berth in three seasons begins in Tampa, Fla., at the USF-Wilson DeMarini tournament on Feb. 10-12. In addition to contests against Delaware, Illinois State and host USF, St. John's will play Florida and Michigan, both ranked No. 1 and No. 2 to end the coaches poll last season.
The Johnnies remain in the sunshine state as the team partakes in the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla., on Feb. 17-19. St. John's will face Savannah State, Syracuse and Toledo, as well as games against C-USA champs, FAU, and AAC champs, Tulsa.
The following week, Feb. 24-27, the Red Storm travels cross-country to compete in one of the top softball tournaments in the nation, the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Johnnies will take on three NCAA Tournament teams in Ohio State, Arizona State and Cal State Fullerton, in addition to playing games against Bethune-Cookman and Stanford. The Johnnies will continue this California excursion with a one game showdown against San Diego State on Feb. 28.
From there, St. John's heads to Johnson City, Tenn., to play in the Buccaneer Classic on March 5-6, hosted by Eastern Tennessee State. They will battle Savannah State for the second time in two weeks, Morehead State in an early morning tussle and ETSU for a pair of games before returning to Queens for nine-straight home contests.
The home opener is set for March 8 against Wagner before hosting Manhattan, Stony Brook, Fairleigh Dickinson and Hofstra on March 17-19 in the St. John's Invitational.
One week later, on March 25-26, the Johnnies take on their first BIG EAST opponent when Providence visits Red Storm Field.
Following a midweek trip to Iona on March 28, the Red Storm will go on the road for a three-game series at Creighton to begin the month of April.
After hosting DePaul for three games on April 8-9, St. John's will travel to Butler on April 15-16 in a rematch of last year's BIG EAST Championship showdown.
Three days later, the Red Storm will then make the short-trip to LIU Brooklyn to battle the reigning NEC Champs.
On April 22-23, St. John's hosts Villanova for three games before taking on Fairleigh Dickinson for the third time in 2017 on the 26th.
St. John's then closes out its home schedule when Georgetown heads to Queens for a three-game series on April 29-30.
After taking on last season's A10 Champs, Fordham, in the Bronx on May 3, the Red Storm wraps up its regular season on May 6-7 with a three-game road series against BIG EAST foe Seton Hall.
The BIG EAST Tournament returns to Rosemont, Ill., and the Ballpark at Rosemont on May 12-13, where the Red Storm will look to avenge last season's defeat in the title game and capture its second conference championship in the last three seasons.
