QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior Lucas Hejhal was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for the first-time in his collegiate career, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Hejhal tallied two victories in the match against Yale where the Red Storm edged the Bulldogs on the road, 4-3. The Linz, Austria, native has 24 wins this season, surpassing his season-high of 21 set last season.
In the Red Storm's win at Yale, Hejhal earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles and a, 6-4, triumph at No.1 doubles. He has now won six of his past seven doubles matches and his doubles record is 14-5 this season.
Hejhal, a member of last season's All-BIG EAST squad, is tied with Vaidik Munshaw for the team-lead in wins this season. In doubles play, Hejhal and Munshaw were ranked as high as No. 49 earlier this season and are 10-3 when playing together.
Hejhal's performances have helped the Red Storm attain 15 wins for the third-consecutive season. No. 61 St. John's (16-5) is also only one win shy of tying a program record for most wins in a season.
Next up, No. 61 St. John's will head back home to take on NJIT for a midweek showdown at noon on April 5.
