Red Storm Women's Tennis Blanks NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. - St. John's women's tennis (7-2) swept NJIT (3-6), 7-0, on Friday night to earn its third-straight victory. It's the second-consecutive year that the Red Storm has blanked NJIT.
The first victory of the day came from the No. 3 doubles team of Anna Morozova and Jaide Collins. They won 6-1 to move their record to 7-1 on the year. At No. 1 doubles, Natallia Vavulina and Zofia Stanisz recorded a 6-2 victory over Nathalie Habegge and Nataljia Tasovac for their seventh victory when playing together. Stephanie Elgegren and Delia Arranz won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles to sweep the doubles play for the Johnnies.
The Red Storm continued its dominance Friday night as the match rolled into its singles play. Olaya Inclan won the first match of singles play with a 6-2, 3-0 (ret.) triumph at No. 4 doubles. Vavulina defeated Rafaella Sampaio at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2 and is 8-1 at the top singles position this year. Morozova, a junior from Russia clinched the match for the Red Storm with a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles and is now 16-2 this season.
Irina Preotescu bounced back from last match to win 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles position. Freshman Arranz recorded a straight-sets victory for her third-straight victory at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Stanisz defeated Amanda Helminsky 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 doubles to earn the sweep over the Highlanders and the Johnnies fifth sweep of the year.
The Red Storm will finish off the weekend road trip on Sunday at noon against Cornell at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
