QUEENS, N.Y. - The dynamic duo of Danaejah Grant and Aliyyah Handford has claimed yet another accolade, as the seniors have been named to the All-Met First Team, it was announced this morning by the MBWA.
Handford, who garners the fourth All-Met honor of her career with her selection to the area's top team, was named the All-Met Rookie of the Year in 2012-13 and has since built upon that performance with three-straight selections to the All-Met First Team.
After earning a spot on the All-Met Second Team as a junior in 2014-15, Grant elevated her game exponentially as a senior, leading the BIG EAST in scoring at 19.6 points per game en route to her first-ever First Team All-Met selection.
In leading the Red Storm to the program's first BIG EAST title in nearly three decades, Handford and Grant put the finishing touches on two of the finest careers in St. John's history. Handford, the program's all-time leading scorer, became the first female player to surpass the 2,000-point plateau in red and white, while also finishing second on the school's all-time steals list and eighth on the career rebounding ledger. Grant, despite playing just 92 games in her collegiate career at St. John's, still managed to amass an astounding 1,498 points for Head Coach Joe Tartamella, the ninth-best career total in Red Storm history.
With Handford and Grant on the roster, the Red Storm made it to four-consecutive postseasons, including three NCAA Tournaments from 2013-16. During that time, the Red Storm rattled off three 23-win seasons and averaged nearly 22 wins per year.
The pair will be honored tomorrow evening at the 83rd NIT/MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, N.Y.
