St. John's Wraps Up Successful Spring Season

QUEENS, N.Y. - This past weekend, the St. John's Women's Soccer Team wrapped up its 2016 spring campaign, putting the finishing touches on a successful exhibition season that should give Red Storm fans hope for a bright future.
Facing off against both collegiate and professional competition, the Red Storm compiled a record of 4-2-1, with their four wins coming by an average margin of nearly three goals per contest.
The Johnnies kicked off exhibition action on March 20, falling 1-0 to Sky Blue FC of the National Women's Soccer League, arguably the world's most prestigious professional women's league. In that contest, the Red Storm played exceptionally well against a team comprised of former collegiate stars and current international standouts. The Johnnies were anchored by a strong defensive effort, as Sky Blue's only tally came on a penalty kick in the 37th minute.
The Red Storm next took the field on Friday, April 1, welcoming Sacred Heart to Belson Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off. Ian Stone's squad dominated throughout the match, as the Johnnies cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Pioneers. The star of the contest for the Red Storm was rising junior Allie Moar, who recorded a hat trick with three tallies to lift St. John's to victory. The Red Storm's two remaining goals also came from of underclassmen, as Mariela Jacome and Lucy Whipp each found the back of the net.
The following Friday night, the Red Storm recorded yet another convincing victory inside the friendly confines of Belson Stadium, downing Manhattan, 4-1. St. John's got another batch of standout performances from its stellar underclassmen, as Moar, Whipp, Samie Scaffidi and Christina Bellero each recorded goals for the Red Storm.
Two days later, St. John's hosted its annual alumnae game, welcoming the Johnnies of yesteryear back to campus for a friendly contest. The current edition of the Red Storm topped the alumnae by a score of 4-1, as Whipp tallied her third goal of the spring, Jacome and Bellero each found the back of the cage for the second time and Morgan Tinari, who led the BIG EAST in assists last season, netted her first of the spring.
After playing Siena to a scoreless tie at Belson Stadium on April 17, the Red Storm closed out its spring season with a pair of games in the Garden State on Saturday, April 23. The Johnnies began the evening with a 2-1 loss to Princeton on the Tigers' home field, as Bellero recorded her third goal of the spring in the losing effort. Shorty after falling to the defending Ivy League champs, the Red Storm blanked reigning NEC Champion Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-0, behind a goal from Anna Maria Baldursdottir.
