QUEENS, N.Y. - On Monday night, the St. John's Athletic Department hosted its annual awards banquet in Carnesecca Arena, celebrating the upcoming completion of yet another successful academic year for the Red Storm.
The evening began with introductory remarks from Interim Athletic Director Joseph Oliva, Esq., who addressed the crowd of student-athletes and recognized many special guests in attendance. Among those he mentioned was Athletic Director Emeritus John W. Kaiser, who has been present at all 70 St. John's Athletic Awards Banquets so far.
After Oliva, Conrado "Bobby" Gempesaw, Ph. D., President, St. John's University, took to the stage and addressed the audience, stressing the vital role that student-athletes play in the University community.
At the conclusion of Dr. Gempesaw's remarks, three student-athletes, Ty Blankmeyer, Harry Burke and Shirley Chui, combined to give a speech on the St. John's motto of "Win. Graduate. Serve." and what the mantra has meant to them over their careers as Red Storm student athletes.
