The Johnnies did a superior job of limiting the Golden Ealges' high-flying offense on Saturday night, holding scoreless an attacking unit that had been averaging 2.67 goals per game entering the weekend. Before the Red Storm held Marquette off the board for 110 minutes, the Golden Eagles were tops in the BIG EAST and sixth in the NCAA in goals per game.
A key component of the Red Storm's BIG EAST opening draw was the effort of redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Withers, who recorded his second-straight shutout with 110 minutes of flawless play. On the season, Withers now ranks third in the NCAA in both goals against average and save percentage, limiting his opponent to just 0.24 goals per 90 minutes and stopping 91.7 percent of shots on frame. As a team, the Red Storm ranks 19th in the nation in goals against average (0.61) and 11th in shutout percentage (0.67).
Junior midfielder Harry Cooksley lived up to his reputation as a prolific offensive talent on Saturday night, pacing the Red Storm with six shots, four of which were on target. The former Division II All-American at Limestone College ranks near the top of the NCAA in shots and shots on goal per game, checking in at sixth in the former category (4.67) and fifth in the latter (2.33). As a team, the Johnnies rank 13th nationally on a per game basis in shots (16.5) and 11th in shots on goal (7.5).
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
Quinnipiac enters Tuesday's contest with a record of 3-4-0 on the season, coming off a 2-1 loss to Holy Cross on Saturday night. St. John's had played the Crusaders just six days prior, dominating the possession game en route to a 2-0 victory.
The Bobcats have proven to be an efficient offensive unit, registering a shooting percentage of .151 through seven games. Eric Da Costa's team has scored eight goals on just 53 tries this season, while Quinnipiac's opponents have found the back of the net eight times on 103 shot attempts.
Quinnipiac is led on the offensive end by freshman forward Eamon Whelan, who has recorded half of his team's goals on the young season.
Chrysostomos Iakovidis has played a majority of the team's minutes between the pipes, registering a 0.85 goals against average, an .862 save percentage and a pair of shutouts.
ST. JOHN'S VS. QUINNIPIAC- THE SERIES
St. John's and Quinnipiac have met on just one occasion in the history of the two programs, a 1-1 tie last season at Belson Stadium on Sept. 22. Mike Prosuk scored his first career goal in that contest.
