MILWAUKEE - For the second-straight game, the Red Storm suffered a setback at the hands of a sharpshooting opponent on the road, as Marquette made 57 percent of its tries from the floor and sank 12 of its 24 chances from beyond the arc, topping St. John's 93-71 at BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Bashir Ahmed led the way with 21 points for the Red Storm (12-16, 6-9), converting on seven of his 14 tries from the floor, including three triples.
Freshman point guard Marcus LoVett added 17 points and five assists, while backcourt mate Shamorie Ponds chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds and six helpers.
Kassoum Yakwe registered seven points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks in the loss.
The Golden Eagles (17-10, 8-7) found it hard to miss from beyond the arc in the early going, sinking nine of their first 12 attempts from downtown before finishing 12-of-24 overall. Five Marquette players tallied double figures, led by Sam Hauser with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including a 5-of-8 effort from three-point range.
The two teams traded buckets early, as a Tariq Owens jumper knotted the contest at 12 five minutes into the action. From there, Hauser sank back-to-back triples, putting the Golden Eagles ahead by six, 18-12, with 13:42 to play in the half.
After the Red Storm narrowed the deficit to two, 18-16, following a pair of Ponds free throws and an Owens layup, Marquette rattled off a 12-0 run to move ahead by 14, 30-16, with 9:08 to play in the half.
A LoVett 3-pointer trimmed the Marquette advantage back down to 10, 39-29, with just under five minutes remaining until the intermission, but Katin Reinhardt rattled off a solo 10-2 run over the next over the next two minutes, putting the Golden Eagles ahead by 18, 49-31, with 2:55 to play.
St. John's responded with six unanswered to trim the Marquette lead to 12, 49-37, but Andrew Rowsey sank three free throws down the stretch to put the Golden Eagles back ahead by 15 at the half.
The Red Storm opened the latter stanza on a 7-2 run, cutting the deficit to 10, 54-44, on a Malik Ellison driving layup with just over two minutes played in the half.
Up 11, 59-48, with just over five minutes gone in the period, the Golden Eagles unleashed an 8-0 run to pull away from the Red Storm.
Trailing by 19, 69-50, with 12 minutes to play in the game, the Johnnies rattled off an 11-4 run to move within 12, 73-61, two and a half minutes later. Ahmed converted on a pair of triples during the tear.
Marquette extended its lead during the closing stretch of the contest, moving ahead by as many as 24 before securing a 93-71 victory.
The Red Storm returns to Madison Square Garden on Saturday afternoon, playing host to Georgetown at noon on FSN and 570 AM WMCA.
