Mackedon in Second at Loyola Intercollegiate After 18 Holes

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Freshman Gerald Mackedon is in second place at the Loyola Intercollegiate after firing a six-under 66 on Saturday's opening round at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz. The St. John's men's golf team sits in 10th place after shooting a par-288 (E) in the squad's first round of the spring season.
Mackedon has overall leader, Nicholas Ross of Eastern Michigan, in his sights as the freshman is two strokes shy of Ross, who is eight-under 64.
Sophomore Seung Yub Baek and senior Kevin King carded a one-over 73 and a two-over 74, respectively, in the opening round to help St. John's stay in contention for a top-10 finish.
The Red Storm is six strokes shy of the top-three ahead of Utah Valley, Air Force, DePaul, Loyola-Maryland, Drake and Murray State in the team standings.
Eastern Michigan represents the top-spot in the overall team leaderboard with a first-round score of 275 (-13), while UT-Martin occupies second after recording an eight-under 280.
St. John's returns to the greens tomorrow morning for round two.
