QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team (10-2) took down New York rival Stony Brook (3-5) at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. on Friday, reaching double-digit wins for the fifth straight year.
The Red Storm took a quick point in doubles play with wins in their first two matches. Anna Morozova and Jessica Livianu started the day with a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot, and Stephanie Elgegren and Jaide Collins defeated Nadia Smergut and Anne-Kathrin Hierl by the same score.
A number of matches went unfinished throughout the afternoon, including the No. 3 doubles slot.
Singles play went just as smoothly for St. John's, taking the first three matches to clinch the victory before the rest of the matchups were called off. Livianu, currently ranked No. 49 in Division I, gave the Johnnies a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 over Yana Nikolaeva.
The Seawolves began to fight back, taking the first set in three other singles matches, but the Red Storm was able to swipe two more points in singles play before Stony Brook could catch up.
Irina Preotescu took her No. 6 singles matchup against Hierl, and Olaya Inclan Solis was not too far behind in her victory at No. 5, a 6-1, 6-2 over Foo. The rest of the singles matches went unfinished.
Last season, the first under Head Coach Lauren Leo, the Johnnies did not win their 10th game until Apr. 8 against Marquette. That squad finished 14-5 and lost in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals.
The Johnnies will have an eight day break before their next match, a Saturday trip to Philadelphia to take on Penn.
