PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The St. John's women's tennis team (10-3) dropped their match against Penn (7-6) at the Hect Center in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday. The Red Storm started out strong but slipped in singles play in the second-ever meeting between the two teams.
The Quakers took the opening doubles match of the day in the No. 2 pairing, but the Johnnies bounced back with a pair of victories to take the doubles point. The No. 1 pairing of Anna Morozova and Jessica Livianu wiped away the loss with a 6-2 win over Kana Daniel and Ashley Zhu.
Zofia Stanisz and Olaya Inclan Solis followed up the win with a triumph of their own, clinching the doubles point with a 6-4 victory in the No. 3 slot.
Penn rebounded with several wins in singles play to take control of the afternoon, but the Red Storm did not go down without a fight. Morozova took her opponent, Ria Vaidya, to the limit in the second set, but Vaidya took a 6-3, 7-5 victory in the No. 2 singles match.
Olaya Inclan Solis and Irina Preotescu also fought hard in their singles matches, but came up just short. Solis nearly forced a third set in the No. 5 slot, but fell 6-4, 7-6(5). Preotescu battled through the duration of her match, but she lost to Marta Kowalska 7-5, 7-5 in the sixth singles matchup.
The Red Storm has dropped both matchups to Penn in program history. Last season, the Quakers topped St. John's 5-2.
The Johnnies will look forward to some home cooking over the next week. They begin a three-match home stretch on Mar. 24 against Georgetown at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y
