QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team (7-11) will look to stop their three-match losing streak against Ivy League opponent Brown (8-4) on Sunday at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., their first home match in two weeks.
The Johnnies are coming off a 1-4 road trip that concluded with a 5-2 loss to George Washington. Sophomore Luka Sucevic, now playing in the No. 1 singles spot, had a pair of singles wins in that span and took a ranked opponent, No. 118 Julius Tverijonas, to the brink in the second set of a hard-fought loss.
The Johnnies have already faced a trio of Ivy League opponents in the ECAC Championships, squaring off against Columbia, Penn and Yale. They play Ivy opponents three more times including Sunday's match.
The Red Storm played Brown twice last season, coming up with victories in both matches. The first was a 4-0 victory in the ECAC Championships, and they followed that up with a 4-1 victory in Providence, R.I. on Mar. 20.
Brown has cooled off in recent matches, losing two straight decisions after a blistering eight-match winning streak that saw them shut out four opponents. They most recently lost their Ivy League opener to No. 45 Yale, 5-2. Brown freshman Jacob Walker has responded well to an increase in playing time, winning five straight singles matches.
The Bears came up with a victory in the last matchup between these two teams in Queens, swiping a 4-3 victory on the last match of the day. Senior Roberto Livi won his doubles match that day to help the Johnnies take the doubles point.
After Sunday's match, the Red Storm will take a 12-day break before their next match against Georgetown.
