RICHMOND, Va. - The St. John's men's tennis team (7-9) fell to the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams (9-5), 6-1, in Richmond, Va. on Thursday. The Rams won their fourth straight match.
The Johnnies fought hard in doubles play, but couldn't clinch the first point of the afternoon. Ognjen Trejgut and Andrei Crapcenco dropped the first match of the day to Daryl Monfils and Marten Jonsson, 6-2. Alan Nunez Aguilera and Dusan Vukicevic took the second doubles match, 7-5, before the Rams captured the doubles point.
Luka Sucevic started singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jonsson in the No. 2 slot. The Rams then rolled off five straight victories to claim the victory. The clincher came in Javier Amantegui's 6-0, 6-2 victory over St. John's Alex Roszkowski.
Daryl Monfils, younger brother of tennis pro Gael Monfils, narrowly edged out St. John's senior Roberto Livi, 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-2, in the top singles slot. Alan Nunez Aguilera was tied 5-5 in the second match of his singles match before an injury forced him to retire.
The Johnnies are now 3-2 in their last five matches and have split the first two games of their Virgnia road trip. Their third and final match in Virginia comes on Saturday against Old Dominion in Norfolk.
