BOSTON, Mass. - The St. John's women's tennis team (9-2) lost a close match to Harvard (6-5), 4-3, at the Beren Tennis Center in Boston on Saturday. It was the first loss for the Red Storm in over a month, as the Johnnies seven-match win streak came to an end in the first match of a home doubleheader for the Crimson.
The afternoon began with a promising win for the Johnnies in the top doubles spot. Jessica Livianu and Anna Morozova took down Erica Oosterhout and June Lee. The Crimson retaliated with a pair of close victories to swipe the doubles point.
Zofia Stanisz and Olaya Inclan Solis pushed their opponents to the edge in the No. 2 doubles position but wound up on the short end of a 7-5 result that clinched the doubles point for Harvard. Stephanie Elgegren and Jaide Collins dropped their doubles match, 6-4, to Sabrina Xiong and Jenna Friedel.
Singles play was a seesaw affair that saw Harvard jump out to a 3-0 lead, but the Johnnies came up with three straight wins to tie it up. Livianu, the No. 61 player in Division I, started the comeback with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Oosterhout in the top singles slot. Olaya Inclan Solis followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory Natasha Gonzalez.
Morozova took a tough three-set victory over Lee, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, to even the score at 3. Elgegren and Friedel needed all three sets to determine the outcome of the match in the decisive final singles match. After losing the first set, Elgegren battled back in a thrilling second set to stay in it, but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-7(9-7), 6-2.
The loss marked the first blemish on the Red Storm schedule since Feb. 3. The seven consecutive wins tied last year's mark for the longest winning streak since 2008. The Johnnies return home for a match against local foe Stony Brook on Mar. 10, at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
