NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- A strong performance from sophomore right-hander Madison Morris was not enough as the St. John's softball team (19-13, 7-2 BIG EAST) dropped a 3-1 decision to Iona on Wednesday at Donald E. Walsh Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Freshman Marissa Rizzi smashed her first-career home run of the season to score the Johnnies' only run of the afternoon. Christina Melendez, Krystal Puga and Savannah Warren accounted for the other three Red Storm hits.
Senior Grace Kramer (4-4) took the loss after surrendering three runs in the sixth. Morris was dominant in her sixth start in the circle, striking out four Gaels and allowing only one hit over four scoreless frames.
Both pitcher's were overpowering early on, trading zeros on the scoreboard through four shutout innings.
In the fifth, Rizzi broke the stalemate with a monster home run to left to give the Red Storm a 1-0 advantage.
After being held scoreless through five frames, Iona (16-15) took the lead on a two-run single up the middle from Katie Newton in the sixth. The Gaels then made it 3-1 on an RBI triple from Hailey Thompson before junior McKenzie Murray came in to get the final out of the inning.
St. John's did not go down easy loading the bases in the seventh with two outs. However, Marnie Skinner closed out the game with a strikeout to pick up the save.
Next up for the Red Storm is a three-game series at Butler in a rematch of last season's BIG EAST Championship game.
