SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - St. John's women's tennis Head Coach Lauren Leo put herself in the record books with the team's 4-3 win over Seton Hall (7-7) in New Jersey on Sunday, setting the program mark for most victories in the first two seasons at the helm.
The Red Storm (15-3) earned its 15th win of the season and is 29-8 overall since the start of last season, breaking Sheila Wildermuth's 41-year-old record. Wildermuth went 28-12 over her first two seasons from 1974-1976.
The Johnnies got to the 15-win mark on the strength of their strong doubles play. St. John's took the doubles point by winning two of the three matches, including a 6-2 victory by Jessica Livianu and Anna Morozova to start the afternoon. The top doubles duo has won 18-consecutive doubles matches this spring.
After Zofia Stanisz and Olaya Inclan Solis clinched the doubles point, the Pirates began to close the gap. Michal Matson took the first singles match of the day over Stanisz in the No. 4 spot to tie it up at one.
The Red Storm responded, snagging the next two singles matches to go up 3-1. Livianu, the No. 69 player in Division I singles, took down Luize Strike 6-1, 6-2 at the top matchup. Morozova followed suit with a tough 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory to place Leo on the verge of history.
Seton Hall did not go down quietly, though, taking the next singles decision to come within a point of leveling the score. Inclan Solis sealed the deal with a 7-6(2), 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles, leaving Leo all alone at the top of the St. John's leaderboard.
Leo is now 3-0 against the Pirates in her St. John's career. She will have a chance to add to her record in the team's season finale against Fordham at the St. John's Outdoor Courts on April 15. Seniors Morozova and Stephanie Elgegren will be honored prior to the match.
