QUEENS, N.Y. -- For the first time this season, St. John's softball (27-15, 14-4 BIG EAST) has swept the BIG EAST weekly awards as senior Grace Kramer was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and junior Krystal Puga took home BIG EAST Player of the Week honors.
Kramer went 2-0 with a 0.70 ERA and 12 strikeouts over 10.0 innings of work to collect her first honors of the season. The senior from San Diego changed the complexion of Saturday's contest to ignite the Johnnies in the series opener. Down 1-0 with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth, Kramer fanned three-straight Hoyas to escape the jam before St. John's made a late inning push to win, 5-1. In her final home contest, Kramer tossed a complete-game four-hitter with five strikeouts to secure St. John's fourth BIG EAST sweep of the season.
Puga won her first Player of the Week nod on Monday after an outstanding weekend at the plate, finishing the series batting .571 with seven RBIs, five runs and two dingers. In the opener, Puga came off the bench and delivered a solo shot in the sixth to help put the game away. On Sunday, the junior from Los Angeles broke the game open in the second with her first-career grand slam before driving in two more runs in Sunday's series-finale to close out the series weekend slugging 1.429.
The Red Storm will close its non-conference schedule on Wednesday as the Johnnies travel to the Bronx for a 2:30 p.m. showdown against Fordham.
