QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's cross country team is set to defend its title on Saturday as the Red Storm head to Old Westbury for the 2nd annual NYIT Invite.
About NYIT Invite
Saturday marks the second running of the race at the historic Old Westbury campus of NYIT. The 5K grass and woodchip course winds through the picturesque campus and features several points that cross pavement or sidewalk. The women's 5K race kicks off at 10 a.m., and will be followed by the men's 8K. Last season, the Johnnies claimed the inaugural invite in convincing fashion, sweeping the top-four individual spots to defeat second-place Fordham by 21 points.
Last Weekend
St. John's kicked off its season last Saturday at the Ed Joyce Fordham Fiasco from historic Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Red Storm was led with nine runners finishing in the top-50, and two in the top-10. Multiple runners also set personal bests in the 5K race. Junior Elizabeth Costantino finished as the top-overall finisher for the Johnnies, placing fourth overall with a new personal best of 19:14.42. Joining Costantino in the top-10 was sophomore Stephanie Gerland, who knocked nearly a minute off her former personal best on Saturday to finish ninth with a time of 19:22.91.
What's On Tap?
Saturday's race will provide another challenge for Jim Hurt's squad, as the Red Storm prepare for the Paul Short Invite on the campus of Lehigh University on Sept. 29.
