St. John’s Earns Ten Victories at West Point Invitational

Oceane Garibal accounts for six of the Johnnies’ ten total wins at the West Point Invitational
West Point Invitational Final Results
The St. John's women's tennis team finished up its second tournament of the fall season this weekend with ten wins at the West Point Invitational, hosted at the Malek and Lichtenburg Tennis Centers in West Point, N.Y.
The weekend was highlighted by sophomore Oceane Garibal, who battled her way through the Singles D Draw to make it to the finals. Garibal won four matches over competitors from Bryant, Fairfield, Marist, and Army in route to clinching a spot in the bracket final. After dropping the first set, 6-2, in the title match, Garibal fought hard to force a third set against Army's Stephanie Dolehide. However, the sophomore would come up just short, dropping the second set and the match, 7-5.
Senior Olaya Inclan Solis also put together a solid weekend on the singles court as well, finishing 1-1 in the Singles A Draw. Solis defeated Lehigh's Paula Gonzalez in the first round, 8-1. In the second round, the senior faced a tough competitor in Dominique Vasile of Quinnipiac. Vasile would give Solis a tough time on the court, defeating the senior, (6-2, 6-2).
Sophomore Gabriela Tenorio would also go 1-1 in her singles bracket. In the first round of the Singles C Draw, Tenorio defeated Stony Brook's Anastasia Koniaev 8-7(3). In her second match, Tenorio fell in a thrilling three-set match to Lehman's Casey Zhong, 6-2, 5-7, 13-11.
Kajsa Stegrell was scheduled to play in the Singles B Draw but withdrew due to injury in her first-round matchup
In doubles, the pair of Solis and Garibal won their first three matches in the Doubles A Draw, defeating opponents from UCONN, Valparaiso, and Army. The duo fought hard in the semifinals but lost, 7-5, to Guzal Yusupova and Dina Hegab of Syracuse.
Delia Arranz would team up with Syracuse's Libi Mesh in the Doubles B Draw. The duo won their first match, 7-5, over UCONN's Jacqueline Lazaro and Elizabeth Kozyi. The duo fell to Army's Paola Bou and Caroline Vincent, 6-2.
St. John's continues their fall slate when they travel up to New Haven, Conn., for the ITA Northeast Regionals, hosted at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center from Oct. 11-15.
