After an impressive showing two weeks ago at the West Point Invitational, the St. John's women's tennis team is ready to compete at the 2018 ITA Regional Championships through the weekend. The Red Storm will head to New Haven, Conn., on Thursday to compete in the six-day tournament at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Centers on the campus of Yale University.
Â
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country.
Â
Head Coach Lauren Leo hopes that a competitive fall schedule will help the Red Storm to success at the upcoming regional championships. All competitors will look to join Jessica Livianu at the ITA National Championships in November.
Â
Sophomores Kajsa Stegrell and Oceane Garibal will compete in Thursday's qualifying singles draw. In the first round, Stegrell is listed to play Renee Ren of Columbia and Garibal will battle against NJIT's Mayar Eltony.
Â
Senior Olaya Inclan Solis and juniors Jessica Livianu and Milka Genkova have already qualified for the singles tournament and will be one of 128 players that are drawn in action on Thursday.
Â
On the doubles side, St. John's will send two teams (Livianu/Genkova and Solis/Garibal) to compete in the tournament of 64 doubles pairs. Kajsa Stegrell and sophomore Gabriela Tenorio are currently listed as alternates in the doubles draw.
Â
The Red Storm put together a solid performance at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships last season, highlighted by Olaya Inclan Solis reaching the round of 16 in the singles tournament and two doubles teams reaching the quarterfinals. The women's squad had three student-athletes in the qualifying rounds, one in the singles tournament, and three doubles teams and finished with an overall singles record of 3-4, and a doubles record of 8-3.
Â
Competition at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center begins Thursday morning. The schedule is posted below.
