Red Storm returns to action on Sunday for the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament
After holding DePaul scoreless for a majority of the match the Blue Demons found the back of the net in the 73rd minute to defeat the St. John's women's soccer team, 1-0, on Thursday night at Belson Stadium.
With a loss to DePaul, the Johnnies move to the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST women's soccer standings and will now host Providence in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday at Belson Stadium. First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The two squads played even for most of the first half, with DePaul holding a 6-5 shot advantage following the opening stanza.
In the second half, the Johnnies continued to bring the pressure with multiple chances towards the goal. Leading scorer Zsani Kajan saw the Red Storm's best opportunity to get on board in the 68th minute with help from BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Christina Bellero. The Melville, N.Y., native chipped a beautiful pass over the head of a DePaul defender to connect with Kajan. The Budapest, Hungary, native then settled the ball before blistering a shot that looked to be labeled for the top corner of the cage, however the ball traveled just over the crossbar to keep the Johnnies scoreless.
DePaul's Jade Eriksen-Russo broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 73rd minute when the forward weaved through multiple St. John's defenders before planting a shot in the bottom right corner of the cage. This marked the lone goal of the contest for both teams.
The Red Storm will return to action on Sunday, playing host to Providence at Belson Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
