The two teams will kick off at 1 p.m. on Sunday
The quest for a second BIG EAST Tournament title will begin for the St. John's women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium, as the no. 3 seeded Red Storm will welcome the no. 6 seeded Providence Friars for a 1 p.m. contest.
Sunday's match will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with John Fanta on the call from Queens.
With a mark of 5-3-1 during league play this season, the Red Storm (9-8-1) enters the postseason after falling to DePaul, 1-0, on Thursday evening. Prior to the Johnnies' recent setback to the Blue Demons, the Red Storm was undefeated over its last five contests.
The dynamic duo of Zsani Kajan and Christina Bellero have anchored the St. John's offense over the 2018 campaign. Kajan has tallied 11 goals with a pair of assists, for a team-high 24 points over the course of the 2018 season. Her 11 goals are tied for the second most in the conference and rank in the top-30 on the national level. Bellero has put forth an incredible effort for the Red Storm over the second half of league play, recording a combined three goals in two of her last three contests. The local product has tallied a combined six goals on the season, just one shy of her career-high seven from the 2017 campaign.
Kajan, Bellero and fellow teammate Claudia Cagnina were all recognized this afternoon by the conference for their hard work and dedication over the 2018 season. Kajan earned a spot on All-BIG EAST First Team, while Bellero and Cagnina were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Meredith Reinhardt has been a key component to the St. John's back line after transferring here from Arizona prior to the 2018 season. The redshirt sophomore has played every minute of every conference game for the Red Storm, compiling a 0.89 goals against average to go along with a .830 save percentage. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native saw three of her four shutouts this season come during conference play.
Belson Stadium has been a welcome sight for the Red Storm this season, as the team has compiled a record of 6-2-1 at home, including a 2-2-1 mark in BIG EAST play.
Sunday's contest will mark the fifth time in the last six seasons that the Red Storm has earned a berth the BIG EAST Tournament, as the Johnnies are 7-10-2 all-time in the conference tournament. The contest will also be the second all-time meeting between the Red Storm and the Friars during the postseason. The Johnnies topped the Friars, 1-0, during the Red Storm's last trip to the quarterfinals in 2016 with a goal from Morgan Tinari in the 84th minute, advancing the team to the semifinals.
Providence enters the first round of the conference tournament with a record of 10-5-3, including a 4-3-2 mark in BIG EAST action. The Friars are led by Hannah McNulty, who has recorded 10 tallies this year. On the defensive end, sophomore goalkeeper Shelby Hogan has started all 18 games between the pipes for Providence, compiling a goals against average of 0.69 to go along with a .874 save percentage.
The two programs enter play on Thursday for the 34th all-time meeting, dating back to 1984, with the series knotted at 15-15-3. The Red Storm and the Friars met earlier this month for their annual regular-season contest that ended in a double overtime scoreless draw.
The winner of Sunday's contest will earn a date with the no. 2 seed, Butler, on Nov. 1 in Indianapolis.
