The Red Storm Downs Providence in Four Sets

The St. John’s Volleyball team moves to 4-2 in the BIG EAST
Providence, R.I. (Oct. 5, 2018) – The St. John's volleyball team defeated the Providence Friars 3-1 on the road Friday evening to improve their record to 4-2 in the BIG EAST.
Kayley Wood led the way for the Red Storm (15-6, 4-2) putting up a game-high 20 kills for the match. Efrosini Alexakou was not far behind with 14 kills and 20 digs to her credit.
Amanda Sanabia is only five digs away from surpassing Karin Palgutova for eighth all-time on the career digs list after posting 21 against the Friars.
The Red Storm got off to a slow start, trailing by as many as five in the first set. St. John's came storming back to tie the game at 23 after going on a late 6-1 run before falling 26-24.
After exchanging several points to start the second set, the Red Storm went on a 9-3 run to expand their lead to 13-7. Wood and fellow hitter Nia Diaz, combined for six of the nine points on that run. Diaz would finish the match with 11 kills on 23 attempts, two service aces, and team-high four total blocks.
Providence would trail by as many as seven before countering with an 8-2 run of their own. The Johnnies closed out the second set 25-23 hitting .381 with 18 kills. Erin Di Maulo had 16 of her match-high 52 assists in the second frame, finishing with four kills, four blocks and two service aces.
St. John's and Providence traded points again through the early part of the third set to tie the game at 10. The Red Storm pulled ahead on a 5-2 run to extend their lead to 15-12. The Johnnies finished the third frame on a 5-0 run to win 25-21.
That 5-0 run would turn into an 11-1 run as the Red Storm jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth and would not relinquish it. St. John's closed out the final set on an 8-0 run to give them their fourth win in BIG EAST play. Alexakou had three kills in the final five points of the match, finishing the evening with 14.
The Red Storm will travel to Creighton on Sunday, Oct. 7 to face the No. 10 Blue Jays at 2 p.m.
